Engineering

The engineering team at Horsburgh & Scott designs custom gearing solutions, analyzes existing product designs, reverse engineers product, and provides engineered upgrades. Our engineering team knows how to transform your visions to reality through advanced 3D modeling, system analysis, and innovative design. We "custom" engineer your product to the exact specification for the intended application to ensure reliability and continued service. We employ rotational dynamics, FEA, modeling software and advanced computational tools to guarantee that your product meets the expectations of the demanding environment and harsh operating conditions.

Custom Gear or Gear Box Engineering
With a combined 360 years of industry experience, our engineers have the knowledge and skill set to design custom gears and gear boxes specifically for your application. Where other suppliers try to offer standardized units or modular components, H&S will value-engineer a custom solution to achieve the results you’re looking for.

Engineering Analysis
Using both commercially available design tools and in-house developed software, H&S analyzes each component to ensure proper fit, form, and function. 3D software allows for “virtual assembly” prior to manufacturing, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed for complex, critical parts to validate the design.

Reverse Engineering
Our team is fully capable of reverse engineering part samples or complete assemblies to yield part-for-part interchangeability when necessary. We are equipped with a coordinate measuring machine that can handle parts up to 4M in outside diameter. The information collected during this process is used as the basis for recommendations and upgrades, as well as an evaluation of the baseline capacity of your equipment. If a particular component has already seen a considerable number of fatigue cycles, we will perform non-destructive evaluations to determine suitability for re-use.

Engineered Upgrades
Many of the orders we process are engineered upgrades to existing equipment. We are frequently able to meet customer demands for increased capacity within the same dimensional envelope. Whether it's a set of gearing or an entire gear box, H&S offers enhancements in material selection and heat treatment, quality, improved tooth geometry, and alternate gearing / shafting configurations to maximize or balance power capacities, and/ or to address wear and contact ratio issues.

Engineering Tools and Practices
Our engineering capabilities are at the heart of our advanced design solutions for demanding customer applications. Our in-house staff utilizes the most advanced design and analysis tools, and follows the most rigorous of industry standards including AGMA, ISO, AASHTO, and API. Our design and analysis technology is supported by our AGMA participation, commercial software, and university research support; and includes:

  • Gear geometry analysis
  • Optimization routines that run numerous cases
  • Mesh capacity ratings to national and international standards
  • Advanced Load Distribution analysis program
  • Dynamic system response analysis program
  • SolidWorks 3-D Solid Modeling
  • Cosmos Finite Element Analysis
  • Rotor Dynamic Analysis
